Amazon declares first round of Premier League coverage a success

The online retailer cum streaming provider is "thrilled" with the positive response it received.

Across three days last week, Amazon streamed 10 Premier League games. It reported a surge in new Prime subscriptions on the 4th and 5th December.

Technically, there were no major glitches, which will come as a relief to Amazon after major outages affected US Open tennis coverage. Of many of the issues that were reported, it was unclear if user's hardware, wi-fi quality or internet connection were contributors to the problem, with picture quality being determined by the type of device used and internet speeds.

Alex Green, managing director of Prime Video Sport Europe said:
We are excited to be the first ever broadcaster to bring fans all 10 games live in a fixture round. We are thrilled and humbled by the positive response from Prime members not only to the production and streaming experience, but also the innovations we have introduced, such as integrated live match stats and highlights through X-Ray plus the ability to experience commentary-free stadium atmosphere.

Amazon said it had over 350 cameras in Premier League stadiums, alongside over 2,000 camera operators, editors, sound engineers, directors, mixers and producers, plus more than 70 on-screen talent to analyse, commentate and host the live broadcasts.

The catch-up window for the first round has now expired. The final set of 10 Premier League games this season to be shown on Amazon will take place on Boxing Day and 27th December.
