Following the launch of new HD channels for TVE Internacional and news channel Canal 24 Horas on Hotbird last week, RTVE has confirmed in an announcement that the existing free-to-air SD distribution of the two channels on Astra 19.2E will cease on 29th February 2020.
This is the latest round of satellite ping-pong for the services, which moved from Astra 19.2 to Hotbird in 2010, moved back in 2014, only to now return to Hotbird, this time in HD.
The dual-illumination of the service until then on both satellites is designed to give viewers and cable providers sufficient time to make adjustments.
RTVE's domestic channels, which are part of the Movistar pay TV service on Astra 19.2 E continue unaffected. The switch will end the unusual situation of Canal 24 Horas being broadcast twice on the satellite - once encrypted for Movistar+ viewers and once unencrypted for everyone else.
