BBC iPlayer smashes 20 million requests thanks to the PM and Killing Eve

The BBC iPlayer breaks through the 20 million request barrier twice.

As viewers remain stuck at home, the BBC has confirmed that Monday 23rd March was the iPlayer’s most popular day ever, with a record 20.4 million requests to stream programmes on the service, as the Prime Minister addressed the nation and introduced movement restrictions.

And last Monday (Easter Monday, 13th April), the epic return of Killing Eve and conclusion of thrilling drama, The Nest - helped the BBC iPlayer’s score its second biggest day ever, with 20.2 million programme requests.

All of the UK's main streaming services have reported similar surges in viewing, with the ITV Hub recording record numbers live streaming its channels, while All 4 also reported its highest ever figures in March.

Meanwhile, the BBC has confirmed it will be bringing back a number of boxsets to keep viewers entertained in the coming months.

The re-additions include both series of Bafta-winning drama Doctor Foster, all 11 series of long-running sitcom My Family, comedy entertainment show The Kumars at No.42, and every episode of detective drama Strike, based on the books by JK Rowling. And from BBC Wales, the arrival of comedy series - Tourist Trap as well as Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience.

When the programmes will be available again on the iPlayer:

Dracula - 21st April
Taboo - 21st April
Tourist Trap - 21st April
Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience - 21st April
Royal Shakespeare Company plays - 23rd April
My Family - 24th April
Doctor Foster - 12th June
The Kumars at No. 42 - 13th June
Strike - 18th June

The returns are staggered as there are restrictions on how many older programmes the BBC can offer on the iPlayer at any one time, in line with the latest BBC iPlayer operating terms agreed by Ofcom on 1st August 2019.

Dan McGolpin, controller of programming and iPlayer, says:
In these difficult times, people are using BBC iPlayer more than ever; to watch the latest news coverage, to learn something new and to sit back and be entertained. It’s already the place to see brand new Killing Eve and we’re now adding even more choice, you’ll be able immerse yourself in hit drama series such as Dracula and Taboo or have a good laugh watching comedies like The Kumars at No.42 and My Family.
