Freesat launches campaign for third generation receivers

Freesat has launched a new ad campaign designed to promote its range of next generation receivers.

Two months after the basic edition of Freesat's new receiver arrived on Amazon, the satellite TV service last week made a recordable version of its new 4K next generation receiver available to buy.

The Freesat UHD-4X Smart 4K Ultra HD Digital TV Recorder is available with either 500GB or 1TB storage for recordings and has been stocked at Currys PCWorld, with prices starting at £199. 4K support and a selection of smart TV apps, including iPlayer, My5, eros now and Netflix are included.

Freesat's ad campaign emphasises the smart TV aspect of the service, although free 4K content is limited to the BBC's Ultra HD trials via the iPlayer.

The UHD-4X series is Freesat's third generation receiver range, coming eight years after the launch of its second generation receiver, that was one of the first to include a backward programme guide integrating catch-up TV. It was initially branded "Freesat Freetime".

Meanwhile, reviews for the basic receiver have been mixed: while some users have enjoyed the simplicity of the device, others have complained about the user interface and the lack of apps - for example, Freesat uniquely doesn't have All4, following a decision by Channel 4 not to make the service available on Freesat, following a dispute over fees. One Amazon user said his Freesat remote also controlled his BT Ultra HD receiver.
