Ceefax acknowledged as ARD Germany celebrates 40 years of teletext

It's the anniversary Ceefax never reached, but the role of the BBC's pioneering text information service is recognised by a teletext service now celebrating 40 years on air.

Germany's ARD Text service will turn 40 on 1st June, with no signs of the service being closed, unlike its UK counterparts. To mark the occasion, the service has a special section commemorating four decades of teletext in the country, including news from the launch year 1980 in the original style of the service, which first launched as a joint operation called "Videotext" with public broadcaster ZDF.

But teletext began its life in the UK and the role of research and development departments at the BBC and IBA in the 1970s is recognised in a special tribute being carried on ARD Text, looking back at the history of teletext and the development of trailblazers Ceefax and Oracle and the creation of a World Standard Teletext, that dictated the blocky nature and limited colour palette of teletext services the world over for years to come.

As part of a number of special pages, ARD Text commissioned Spanish Teletext Artist Raquel Meyers to produce a number of works to celebrate the occasion. ▶️ https://www.ard-text.de/index.php?page=632 (Not suitable for mobile browsers)

Ceefax ended broadcasts in 2012 after 38 years, coinciding with the final stage of the digital switchover, although regions that had switched to digital before then had already lost the service. Oracle ended on 31st December 1992. Ceefax successor BBC Red Button Text is currently under review by the BBC after its closure was aborted at the beginning of the year.
