ViacomCBS to go global with streaming service in next 12 months

CEO's comments shed more light on plans to go global with a streaming service.

Bob Bakish, CEO of ViacomCBS has once again dropped more hints regarding his company's plans to launch a global subscription video-on-demand service, after originally mentioning plans for such a service back in February.

According to Bakish, the new service will become available in "multiple markets" around the world in the next 12 months.

He told investors that service "will harness the full power of the of the ViacomCBS portfolio, creating a meaningful brand presence in streaming video in key markets around the world."

The company is currently building up its CBS All Access service in the USA, adding content from Paramount and reporting continued growth in subscribers, but global plans appear to include a rebrand of the service.

In the UK, ViacomCBS is best known as the owner of Channel 5 and pay TV channels including MTV. It's also a participant in the CBS AMC UK channel partnership, that runs CBS-branded channels on all major TV platforms. Whether the UK is on the list of markets ViacomCBS has in mind for the initial rollout remains to be seen; it's current UK video-on-demand services are very much fragmented based on channel brands.
