Hisense to bring Roku TVs to the UK

Black Friday sees the UK launch of a new range of smart TVs with built-in Roku and Freeview Play support.

Shipping week commencing 25th November, TV manufacturer Hisense will make its Roku smart TVs available in the UK, with stock arriving at Argos in time for Black Friday.

The TV sets will also include Freeview Play, providing access all the main linear TV channels via an aerial, with all main on-demand players that are standard with Freeview Play including BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub and All4 and soon BritBox, plus all the apps that are currently available on the Roku platform. From the Roku Channel Store, consumers can pick and choose from 5000+ streaming channels such as Netflix, Prime Video and NOW TV. Until now, Roku has only been available via its boxes and streaming sticks in the UK.

The TVs will be available in 43”, 50”, 55” and 65” screen sizes and will support HD, 4K UHD and HDR.

As is the case with existing Roku boxes and sticks, Roku TV models can be controlled with a simple and intuitive remote control or through the free Roku Mobile App for iOS and Android devices. The mobile app also enables consumers to cast photos and videos to their Roku TV, use voice search and connect headphones for private listening.

Arun Bhatoye, Senior Marketing Manager at Hisense said:
We are incredibly proud to launch the first Roku TV models in the UK. These new 4K TVs offer stellar picture quality, endless entertainment and an affordable price. We are now just days away from the UK’s first Roku TV models to hit the stands; it’s a very exciting time.

Bart Bomers, VP EMEA at Roku said he was thrilled to launch Roku TV in Europe adding :
Roku TV models have been incredibly popular in the US for years. Roku TV models simply offer a fantastic smart TV experience, are simple to use, packed with entertainment“ and deliver exceptional value.

What is Freeview Play?
Freeview Play combines linear TV with on-demand and catch-up TV from BBC, ITV, C4, C5, CBS and UKTV on Smart TVs and boxes, plus from late 2019, the new BritBox service. Catch-up TV is integrated into the Electronic Programme Guide allowing viewers to scroll back and watch programmes that have been broadcast in the last seven days on channels that support the service.

You can tell if the device you’re using is a standard Freeview device or a Freeview Play device by going to Freeview channel 100. If you can see a plain text screen, with black background, you’ve got the older Freeview service. If you can see a portal to Freeview Play with all the different catch-up services, you’re on the next generation service.

What is Roku?
Roku is a manufacturer of compact streaming boxes and sticks that enable users to access a range of on-demand, live and catch-up TV services streamed via the internet via the Roku Channel Store. The boxes/sticks are an ideal solution for users who have a non-smart TV or a older smart TV that no longer supports some apps.

Roku has now teamed up with TV manufacturers to include the Roku Channel Store on TV sets, without the need for a separate box or stick.

In the UK, Now TV boxes and sticks are variants of Roku boxes/sticks with adaptations for Sky's streaming service Now TV.
