BBC launches first pop-up iPlayer TV channel

The BBC iPlayer is launching its first pop-up TV channel - a sign of things to come as focus is moved away from the Red Button service.

Football fans can enjoy two full days of FA Cup fourth round action this weekend (January 25th – 26th), with live games, classic matches, highlights and all the goals via the FA Cup Channel on the BBC iPlayer.

Previously, the BBC would use their linear BBC RB1 channels for such purposes, adding additional such channels during special events. Although the new pop-up channel doesn't mean the end of that particular arrangement - only the Red Button text service is being axed this month, it is a sign of things to come for the BBC, ahead of this summer's Olympics. The red button on newer connected devices is being reconfigured to direct viewers straight to the iPlayer, sidestepping the traditional Red Button linear service.

All the live games will feature on the channel, including Brentford vs Leicester on Saturday and holders Manchester City vs Fulham and Shrewsbury Town vs Liverpool on Sunday. For each match, fans can choose between the commentary from BBC One, BBC Radio 5 live or to watch the match with no commentary at all.

On Saturday, fans will also have the option to turn over to watch the Women’s FA Cup fourth round derby as Manchester United taken on their local rivals Manchester City.

Dan McGolpin, controller of BBC iPlayer, said:
The FA Cup pop-up channel will be available exclusively on BBC iPlayer all weekend and is a great example of the Total TV experience that you find there. It will be the place to enjoy all of the build-up and all of the goals, the live 4th round ties with your chosen commentary feed and some classic matches from the world’s original cup competition. Whatever kind of drama you are passionate about, BBC iPlayer is a great place to watch.
