Fransat to lose channels after satellite fault

roubles with Eutelsat's new satellite means fewer channels for Fransat users.

A fault during the launch of Eutelsat 5 West B which led to its some solar panels failing and the satellite operating at reduced capacity means that French satellite TV provider Fransat having to drop its non-core channels, including beIN SPORTS, OCS, Melody and Jeunesse (Canal J, Tiji, Boing, Boomerang and Toonami channels) at the end of May.

From 31st May 2020, Fransat will continue with its core offering of providing free-to-view access to the main French terrestrial channels, mainly for the benefit of those out of range of the country's terrestrial TV signal and as an alternative to rival TNT Sat on Astra 19.2°E.

Third party channel offerings such as RMC Sport are unaffected.

Despite its failings, Eutelsat 5 West B was hurriedly brought into service last month as its predecessor 5 West A was starting to incline.
