C4 viewers to be constantly reminded to stay at home

Channel 4 has followed the example set by a number of broadcasters around the world.

The broadcaster launched its new "stay at home" on-screen graphic next to its logo across its channel family at 1pm. It says the message will stay on screen "until further notice".

Alex Mahon, CEO at Channel 4 said:
During this unprecedented national crisis we want to use our reach with mass audiences, particularly with young and hard to reach viewers, to spread this vital public health message and remind everyone to follow the latest advice and stay at home.

Channel 4 follows a number of broadcasters that have posted stay at home messages or hashtags on their channels following the introduction of restrictions on movement to help reduce Coronavirus cases. For example, Germany's largest commercial broadcasters commenced a similar initiative last weekend; French stations are also carrying similar messages.

On Monday night, the British PM Boris Johnson ordered the public to stay at home except for four specific reasons, including essential food shopping and one daily walk, jog or run for exercise purposes. Gatherings of more than two people, unless they are from the same household are banned.

How viewers will react to Channel 4's initiative remains to be seen, as on-screen logos and text have provoked a backlash from viewers in the past, such as when the BBC introduced an on-screen logo on BBC HD services.
