NBC offloads Euronews stake

NBC now has Sky as its international partner for a new global news service.

NBC is selling its 25% stake in Euronews, ending a year long speculation over the future of the venture after NBC owner Comcast took over Sky, which offered better partnership opportunities than Euronews.

The news was first reported by the FT's Mark Di Stafano, but has now also been confirmed in French media outlets, in the country where the news channel has its HQ.

In April 2019, we reported that the previously planned rebrand of Euronews to Euronews NBC was off the agenda, indicating a change in NBC's priorities just months after its parent company Comcast took over Sky.

According to a recent report in German industry publication Infodigital, Euronews bosses have been reconsidering the previously announced rebrand of the channel to "Euronews NBC"; its research indicated viewer perception of the channel has improved without needing a name change.

A further sign of change came later in 2019, the channel's English language service abruptly pulled its primetime Raw Politics show - a very US style news show that was added to the schedule after NBC took shares in the channel. The show was meant to signal a major change in direction for the channel, from its usual hourly cycle of news and features.

Egyptian Naguib Sawiris, who already owns the largest stake in the channel, has bought back NBC's shares.

When NBC first bought a share in Euronews back in 2017, many drew parallels with Discovery's initial minority shareholding in Eurosport, which over time became a full takeover.

NBC News is working at launching a new global news channel from Sky in London, although the launch of that channel has been delayed due to the ongoing lockdown.
