Instead, the BBC will be celebrating 50 years of the Somerset-based music festival with highlights of previous events during the weekend when Glastonbury should have been held. Since the 1990s, the event has been televised on the BBC.
From 10am on Thursday 25th June until late Monday 29th June 2020, fans will be able to relive highlights including Ed Sheeran’s headline performance from 2017, Christine & The Queens debut in 2016, Florence + The Machine conquering all in 2015 and LCD Soundsystem’s Other Stage set from 2016 as well as a host of performances from the BBC’s TV coverage and acoustic sessions via the pop-up channel. Additional content from the archives will also be made available on the iPlayer on an on-demand basis.
The iPlayer pop-up channels form part of the BBC's new strategy for providing additional live coverage of music and sport events, having previously set up temporary Red Button streams on traditional TV platforms to deliver such coverage. The FA Cup was the first such event to benefit from the new pop-up channel arrangement earlier this year, although most of it was also available on BBC Red Button 1.
On top of special coverage on the iPlayer, BBC One, BBC Two and BBC Four as well as BBC Sounds will have special coverage, with BBC Two's The Glastonbury Experience providing three 90 minute live programmes in prime time on BBC Two from Friday 26th to Sunday 28th June 2020. Jo Whiley and Mark Radcliffe will host Friday's programme, while Clara Amfo and Lauren Laverne will present the Saturday and Sunday editions. Performances include:
