BBC launches Programme Explorer tool

New BBC tool aims to make searching for new and archive TV and radio programmes easier.

The broadcaster has lauched "Programme Explorer", which searches through the BBC's online services to find any available recent or archive content, based on subject, presenter or programme name.

The BBC says it will make it easier to find existing material across all of BBC Online, which to date hasn't been easily searchable and will be of special interest to those with niche interests.

Examples of how the search works
The BBC has provided two examples of how searching for presenters or a subject work:
A search for QI presenter Sandi Toksvig will reveal all available episodes of QI on the iPlayer, plus any other programme on TV or radio (via BBC Sounds) that feature Sandi Toksvig.
A search for "tomatoes" returns results that span programmes that include recipes on how to cook with them, science on genetic modification and programmes that explore the history of the tomato or programmes such as Gardeners' World that discuss growing tomatoes.

How to access Programme Explorer
It's part of the BBC Genome site, also known as the home of archive TV and radio listings:

Peter Rippon, executive editor of the BBC Archive, says:
Programme Explorer is a real treasure trove for anyone with a niche passion about virtually anything, and an invaluable informal learning tool. There are over 200,000 programmes available for people to watch or listen, and until now it’s been difficult to find exactly what you’re looking for. This tool also makes it easy to find things you didn’t know you were looking for - sending you down a rabbit hole, following your curiosity through a wide range of brilliant BBC programmes from across the archive.
