The broadcaster was found to have breached UK broadcasting rules on multiple occasions with regards due impartiality over reports about the protests in Hong Kong triggered by proposed law changes. CGTN is part of China's state broadcaster CCTV, and broadcasts an English language news channel around the world, including programmes from its recently launched London news centre (pictured above).
An investigation into the broadcaster by Ofcom revealed that on a number of occasions during the 2019 Hong Kong protests, CGTN's The World Today and China 24 programmes did not met UK due impartiality rules when reporting the issue.
Ofcom is awaiting representations from CGTN before deciding on a final outcome. It has today warned CGTN that it is "minded to consider these breaches for the imposition of a statutory sanction."
The controversy follows issues with Russia's English language news channel RT, which was found to have broken UK due impartiality broadcasting rules over the Salisbury poisoning incident. To date, RT has escaped major sanctions and still broadcasts across various UK television platforms.
