Pay TV giant dips its toe into the world of High Dynamic Range (HDR), with the launch of the Sky Nature channel.
In the beginning, just three on-demand titles from the new Sky Nature channel will be available with HDR (see below), but Sky plans to broaden its offer, with HDR movies by Christmas and HDR support for Netflix and Disney+ coming later this year, as well as more on-demand content from Sky.
Live sport is on the broadcaster's HDR roadmap for next year, with the postponed Olympics due to feature centre-stage.
Sky raised eyebrows at the end of last year when an employee indicated online that HDR would be delayed for a least a year, grabbing the attention of Forbes and many annoyed customers. Although, technically this is now not the case, it will be several more months before the amount of HDR content grows substantially, coming much later than some of their rival TV platforms and indeed many TV manufacturers who already offer HDR support on all new models.
How to get HDR from Sky
To benefit from HDR, Sky customers need to be a subscriber to the Sky Experience pack or Ultra HD with Sky Q. But only newer Sky Q boxes will support HDR following a software update. Original 1TB boxes are incompatible.
What's available in HDR at launch?
Day 1 HDR availability consists of these three Sky Nature titles:
Gangs of Lemur Island
Pridelands: Wilderness reborn
Malawi: Wildlife Rescue
