Summer launch for NBC Sky World News

Sky and NBCUniversal will launch a new global news channel this summer, which will be based in London.

Recruitment for the new channel began back in the autumn following the coming together of NBC and Sky under common ownership last year.

The NBC Sky World News channel is expected to utilise carriage contracts for the Sky News international feed on satellite and cable services in continental Europe, while new streaming service Peacock will carry the channel in the USA. Details of how the channel will be distributed in the UK remains to be announced.

The new channel appears to come at the expense of Euronews, which at one point was due to be rebranded 'Euronews NBC' and play a much larger role in delivering NBC News content across Europe and the world, following the arrival of NBC as a major stakeholder in the channel. After 18 months of major changes on the English language service, Euronews abruptly cancelled live evening show Raw Politics last year, returning its focus on regular news bulletins and rowing back on rebranding the channel.

Variety reports Deborah Turness, president of NBC News International as saying that the combined organisation will open ten new international bureaus. She added: "We see an opportunity to begin an approach that isn’t filtered through a U.S. perspective or a British perspective or any national perspective."

For context, the existing Sky News International service is the UK service with different ad breaks and some variation during sports bulletins, with UK news topping the agenda. NBC Sky World News will have an international news agenda, competing with the likes of BBC World News and Euronews.
